The short answer

McDonald’s South Africa builds its local menu around boerewors, the coiled farm sausage that South Africans cook over coals. The Boerie Burger comes as a single, a double, a version with egg and a Boerie and Hash Brown Stack, all on a breakfast board that runs all day next to an SA Breakfast. McCafé pours rooibos. Corn comes in a cup as a side. There is a Low GI sandwich range, chilli cheese runs across burgers, tenders and wedges, and the Grand Chicken line comes in Classic, Special and Spicy. Prices are in rand and set per restaurant.

This is the first African market on the site. McDonald’s opened its first South African restaurant in 1995 and now runs a few hundred of them. That’s enough history for the board to have grown permanent local items of its own, and they go well beyond a seasonal promotion or two.

The local spine is boerewors. It’s a sausage of coarsely ground beef, often with some pork or lamb in it, seasoned with coriander and clove and a little vinegar, and it goes on the braai in one long coil. McDonald’s turns it into a patty and gives it four builds: the Boerie Burger, the Double, one with an egg, and the Boerie and Hash Brown Stack. All four live on the all-day breakfast board rather than with the beef burgers, which is the detail most visitors get wrong when they go looking for them.

After that, the signals come thick. McCafé sells rooibos tea. A cup of sweetcorn is a side, in the same sizes as fries. A Low GI sandwich range puts glycemic-index labelling on a fast-food menu board, which no other McDonald’s market on this site does. Chilli cheese is close to a house flavour, appearing on a beef burger, on chicken tenders and on potato wedges at the same time. Group orders come in Sharebags where other countries use a Sharebox. A four-flavour McWrap range is running limited, Korean BBQ included, and the Grimace Shake is still on the dessert board. Those local items go on our worldwide exclusives table.

Checked September 11, 2026. Prices are in rand, set by each restaurant and not published on the website, so the McDonald’s app is where you’ll find yours. The site also lists a lot of items as a name and a photo with no build underneath, which is why several rows below say the recipe isn’t published. We’d rather tell you that than guess.

The Boerie range and breakfast

South Africa’s breakfast board runs all day, and it’s where the local cooking actually shows up. Alongside the four Boerie builds there’s an SA Breakfast, a Mega McMuffin above the standard Egg McMuffin and Sausage McMuffin with Egg, a hash brown on its own, and a Breakfast Wrap on limited run.

Item What it is
Boerie Burger Boerie Burger A boerewors sausage patty in a bun, the anchor of the local menu.
Boerie Burger Double Boerie Burger Double Two sausage patties, which is the only stated difference.
Boerie and Egg Burger Boerie and Egg Burger The sausage with an egg added, orderable at any hour.
Boerie and Hash Brown Stack Boerie and Hash Brown Stack Sausage plus a hash brown inside the bun, in the local tradition of putting the starch in the sandwich.
SA Breakfast SA Breakfast The one item with the country in its name; the components aren’t published.
Mega McMuffin Mega McMuffin The stacked muffin, sold in Australia as a Mighty McMuffin.
Breakfast Wrap Breakfast Wrap A limited-run campaign item on the morning board.

Beef

The beef list is mostly familiar, with two names to stop on. The Chilli Cheese Double is the flagship of the chilli cheese flavour that runs through the rest of the menu, and the McFeast is an old McDonald’s name that South Africa kept when others dropped it. The value end holds the Cheeseburger, the Double Cheeseburger and the Hamburger, exactly as you’d expect.

Item What it is
Big Mac Big Mac The standard build, on local boards since 1995.
Quarter Pounder with Cheese Quarter Pounder with Cheese Keeping its imperial name in a metric country.
Quarter Pounder with Cheese Deluxe Quarter Pounder with Cheese Deluxe The dressed version at the top of the list; the build isn’t published.
McFeast McFeast An old McDonald’s name, permanent here, recipe unpublished.
Chilli Cheese Double Chilli Cheese Double burger Double beef under the flavour that repeats on tenders and wedges.

Chicken

This is the deepest part of the board. The Grand Chicken line runs three ways, the McCrispy line another three, and the older McChicken and a plain Chicken Burger sit underneath them, so three generations of chicken sandwich are on sale at once. Spice gets its own vocabulary here: a Cajun Chicken, a Jalapeno Chicken, a Grand Chicken Spicy and a Chicken Foldover Spicy are four separate listings. Chicken Tenders come in 2 and 4 piece boxes, McNuggets in 4 and 6, and a SnackWrap is on the board.

Item What it is
Grand Chicken Classic Grand Chicken Classic The base of the premium chicken line.
Grand Chicken Special Grand Chicken Special The middle build; what makes it special isn’t published.
Grand Chicken Spicy Grand Chicken Spicy The hot one of the three.
Chicken Foldover Chicken Foldover Chicken in folded bread instead of a bun, with a spicy version beside it.
McCrispy McCrispy Plain, Deluxe and Spicy, as on most modern boards.
Chilli Cheese Tenders Chilli Cheese Tenders Tenders under the house chilli cheese flavour.
Chicken Sharebag Chicken Sharebag The group order, in a bag rather than a box, with a beef version alongside.

Limited-time McWraps

Four full-size McWraps are running as a campaign, which makes South Africa one of the markets keeping the format alive after the US dropped it. The flavours are worth reading as a set: Korean BBQ for the global trend, jalapeno and plain spicy for the local appetite for heat, and lemon pepper for the seasoning South African grilled-chicken counters have used forever. A 4-piece McWings box is listed in the same limited-offers section.

Item What it is
Korean BBQ McWrap Korean BBQ McWrap The most travelled flavour of the four.
Jalapeno McWrap Jalapeno McWrap Matching the Jalapeno Chicken on the permanent board.
Lemon Pepper McWrap Lemon Pepper McWrap The most local-tasting flavour in the range.
Spicy McWrap Spicy McWrap Plain heat, no other flavour angle.

Sides and desserts

The corn cup is the item people photograph, and it makes sense once you remember that maize is the national staple. The dessert case carries the usual McFlurries in Oreo and KitKat, a Golden McFlurry and a Blueberry and Cheesecake pie on limited run, a caramel sundae and a soft serve cone. Two entries stand out: Pie a la Mode, which pairs a pie with soft serve, and the Grimace Shake, still listed here years after its viral summer. Cheesy Jalapeno Bites are the other limited side.

Item What it is
Corn Corn A cup of sweetcorn, sold in fry sizes.
Fries Fries The default side, nothing local about them.
Chilli Cheese V-Cut Wedges Chilli Cheese V-Cut Wedges Thick wedges under the house flavour, on limited run.
Pie a la Mode Pie a la Mode A pie with soft serve, a format most markets skip.
Grimace Shake Grimace Shake The purple berry shake from the 2023 promotion, still listed.

McCafé

McCafé is a separate counter in most South African restaurants, with its own board and its own queue, and it carries the two most locally specific things on the whole menu. One is rooibos. The other is the Low GI sandwich range, which is a health-labelling idea aimed squarely at South African shoppers, who have been buying low-GI bread in supermarkets for years. The bakery side runs a bran muffin, a custard danish, a red velvet round cake, a carrot cake and a homestyle doughnut, and the drinks side adds filter coffee, a flat white and iced lattes in caramel, hazelnut and vanilla.

Item What it is
Rooibos Tea Rooibos Tea The caffeine-free red bush tea grown in the Cederberg.
Low GI Chicken Club Sandwich Low GI Chicken Club Sandwich Glycemic-index labelling on a McDonald’s board.
Low GI Cheese and Tomato Sandwich Low GI Cheese and Tomato Sandwich The vegetarian half of the pair.
Mango Frappe Mango Frappe The blended iced mango drink at the coffee counter.

FAQ

What is a Boerie Burger?

It’s a McDonald’s burger built on a boerewors patty, boerewors being the coiled South African farm sausage of coarsely ground beef seasoned with coriander, clove and vinegar that people cook over coals at a braai. McDonald’s South Africa sells four versions: the single, the Double, one with an egg and a Boerie and Hash Brown Stack. All four sit on the all-day breakfast part of the menu, so you can order one at lunch.

How different is the McDonald’s South Africa menu?

The core is the same as anywhere, with the Big Mac, Quarter Pounder, McCrispy line, McChicken and McNuggets all present. What you won’t find in the US or the UK is the Boerie range, the SA Breakfast, rooibos at McCafé, a corn cup as a side, the Low GI sandwiches, the chilli cheese items, the Chicken Foldover and the Grand Chicken Special. Group orders are also called Sharebags here instead of Sharebox.

What is a Low GI sandwich at McDonald’s?

It’s a McCafé sandwich made on low glycemic index bread, meaning bread that raises blood sugar more slowly than standard white. Two are listed, a Chicken Club and a Cheese and Tomato. Low-GI labelling is common on South African supermarket bread, and this is the only McDonald’s market on this site that has taken the idea onto its menu board.

Does McDonald’s South Africa publish prices?

No. Prices are in rand and set restaurant by restaurant, and the website shows items without them, so the McDonald’s app is the only reliable source for your branch. The website also stops short of publishing full builds for several items, the SA Breakfast and Grand Chicken Special among them.
