The short answer

Guatemalans call themselves chapines, and McDonald’s Guatemala put the word on a McMuffin: egg, cheese and beans with ham or sausage. Past breakfast, the board sells bone-in Pollo McCrispy fried chicken by the bucket with tortillas, a cheese-and-loroco tostado, and a McCafé pouring horchata, iced coffee horchata and Café Guatemalteco, with pastel de elote in the case. Prices are in quetzales in the app; the corporate menu leaves them off.

Guatemala shares a franchise platform with El Salvador and Honduras, so plenty of this board will look familiar if you’ve read those pages: the Antojos (cravings) category, the Gourmet burger tier with guacamole, the loroco toastie and the crunchy grape McFlurry. Each country localizes through the names. El Salvador’s bean McMuffin is the Salvadoreño, Honduras’s is the Catracho, and here it’s the Chapín. The other thing to know about Guatemala is the chicken: bone-in fried pieces sold under the Pollo McCrispy name, by the piece or by the bucket, with delivery storefronts of their own. Fried chicken

Guatemala is the home country of Pollo Campero, the fried-chicken chain, so McDonald’s bone-in chicken here goes up against a local favorite. The Pollo McCrispy comes in one, two or three pieces, or six to a bucket, and on Uber Eats it runs as its own storefront under the name “Pollo McCrispy de McDonald’s.”

McCafé in coffee country

Guatemala is one of the world’s recognized coffee origins, with growing regions like Antigua and Huehuetenango known to specialty buyers, and McCafé here sells the local crop both by the cup and by the bag. The same counter is where the menu gets most local, with horchata and a sweet corn cake.

Beyond those, the board runs six frappés, five iced coffees (the horchata one included), berry and mango smoothies, chai hot or as a frappé, a green tea, four McFizz sodas, blackberry and strawberry cheesecake, brownie bites, and a Té Guatemalteco tea line with flavors like Manzanilla Relax and Menta Fusión.

FAQ

What does “chapín” mean on the McDonald’s Guatemala menu?

It’s the everyday word Guatemalans use for themselves, so the McMuffin Chapín is the Guatemalan McMuffin: egg, cheese and beans with ham or sausage. The same idea runs as the Salvadoreño in El Salvador and the Catracho in Honduras.

Does McDonald’s Guatemala sell fried chicken?

Yes: bone-in Pollo McCrispy, in one to three pieces or a six-piece bucket that comes with tortillas (or buns). In Guatemala that puts McDonald’s up against Pollo Campero, the fried-chicken chain that started here.

Does McDonald’s Guatemala serve horchata?

Yes, at McCafé, both as plain horchata and as an iced coffee horchata. The same counter sells Café Guatemalteco, bags of Guatemalan coffee to take home and pastel de elote.

How much does McDonald’s cost in Guatemala?

This page doesn’t list prices, because the corporate menu doesn’t publish them; they’re in quetzales in the McDonald’s app and the delivery apps. For how the menus compare across countries, see McDonald’s around the world.
